How to add the keyboard on either phone, what the one permission it asks for actually does, and what to try when something is not working.
Setting it up on iPhone
A custom keyboard on iOS is added in Settings rather than in the app, and it takes three steps. The app's own setup screen walks you through the same ones and ticks them off as you go.
- Add the keyboard. Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards → Add New Keyboard… → Prompt AI Keyboard.
- Allow Full Access. Tap Prompt AI Keyboard in that same list and turn on Allow Full Access. Without it the keys type, but the AI key and the microphone cannot work — see below for what it does and does not give us.
- Switch to it. Open any app with a text field, tap the globe key at the bottom of the keyboard, and pick Prompt AI Keyboard.
If the app's setup card still shows a step you have completed, come back to the app and type a character in its "Try the keyboard" field — that is what tells the app the keyboard has actually run.
Setting it up on Android
Two steps, both from the app's setup screen or from Settings.
- Enable it. Settings → System → Languages & input → On-screen keyboard → Manage on-screen keyboards, and turn on Prompt AI Keyboard. Android shows a warning about keyboards being able to collect text; that warning appears for every third-party keyboard, and what we do with text is in the section below.
- Select it. Open any app with a text field and use the keyboard-switch button in the navigation bar, or Settings → System → Languages & input → Default keyboard.
Android has no equivalent of Full Access — there is nothing else to grant.
What "Allow Full Access" actually does
This is the step people stop at, and stopping to think about it is the right instinct. Here is the honest version.
On iOS a keyboard extension is sandboxed and cannot reach the network at all until Full Access is on. The Enhance key sends your text to be rewritten and the microphone sends audio to be transcribed; both are network calls, so both need it. There is no way to build those features without it, and a keyboard that has not been granted it can only type.
What it does not mean is that we now see what you type. Text leaves your phone when you tap Enhance or the mic, and only what is in that one field at that moment. Nothing is stored after the result comes back, there is no account, and the words the keyboard learns from you never leave the device at all. The full detail is in the privacy policy.
If you would rather not grant it, the keyboard still works as a keyboard — typing, autocorrect, suggestions, emoji, undo and redo are all on-device and need no permission. You simply will not have the AI key or voice typing.
Setting up voice typing
The microphone permission is granted in the app, not in the keyboard, on both platforms — neither an Android keyboard service nor an iPhone keyboard extension is allowed to raise that prompt itself. Tapping the mic key the first time sends you to the app to grant it, and back again.
On iPhone there is one more thing to know: an app extension cannot open the microphone at all, so the app records on the keyboard's behalf. That is why iOS shows the orange recording indicator while a voice session is live, and why the app has to have been opened at least once. A session ends on its own after a period you choose in the app's Voice screen (15 minutes by default).
Switching, reordering and removing
- Switch keyboards. iPhone: the globe key at the bottom-left of the keyboard. Android: the keyboard-switch button in the navigation bar. Nothing you already had is replaced.
- Remove it. iPhone: Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards → Edit → delete. Android: turn it off in Manage on-screen keyboards. Deleting the app removes everything it stored on the device with it.
- Change what the AI key does. Long-press the ✦ key and pick a mode; it stays set until you change it. Or turn the key off entirely — it keeps its place and a tap opens the chooser instead.
Common problems
The keyboard flashes and my old one comes back
iOS closes a keyboard extension that uses too much memory and replaces it with the system one. If it happens repeatedly, restarting the phone clears it in almost every case; if it does not, please write to us with the phone model and iOS version.
The Enhance key says I am out for today
Both plans have a daily allowance and it resets each day. The meter above the keys shows what is left. Pro raises the cap substantially.
Nothing happens when I tap Enhance on an empty field
Most modes rewrite what you have typed, so there has to be something there. The two exceptions are Reply, which works from the message you copied, and Ask AI, which needs a question.
Voice typing says it needs setting up
Three things have to be true: the microphone permission (granted in the app), a live voice session (started from the app's Voice screen, or automatically when you arrive there from the mic key), and on iPhone, Allow Full Access. The mic key sends you to whichever one is missing.
Autocorrect is changing words I want
Backspace once immediately after a correction and it is reverted — and the keyboard learns that spelling as yours from that single correction. Typing a word twice teaches it too. Learned words can be cleared from Settings at any time.
My language is not in the keyboard layout
The letter keys are a Latin QWERTY with accents on long-press. Translation covers 45+ languages and the AI answers in whatever language you write in, but if you need a non-Latin script layout, the right tool is your system keyboard alongside this one — the globe key switches between them.

How do I add Prompt AI Keyboard on my iPhone?
Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards → Add New Keyboard… → Prompt AI Keyboard, then tap it in that list and turn on Allow Full Access. Then open any app, tap the globe key on the keyboard, and pick it.
How do I add it on Android?
Settings → System → Languages & input → On-screen keyboard → Manage on-screen keyboards, and turn on Prompt AI Keyboard. Then select it with the keyboard-switch button in the navigation bar, or set it as the default keyboard in the same Settings screen.
Why does the keyboard need Allow Full Access on iPhone?
